What is the relationship between Getty Images (GYI) and Compassionate Eye Foundation (CEF)?

Getty Images and Compassionate Eye Foundation are collaborating in a number of ways.  In 2005, CEF founder Robert Kent, a contributing photographer to Getty Images, approached the company about setting up a stock contract for the Foundation.  Getty Images Photographer Relations assisted in this effort and in June 2006, on the Summer Solstice, Robert brought together a group of photographers, who all did shoots on that day.  His Getty Images art director advised on the shoots.  All of the photographers involved donated their copyright to the Foundation's new stock contract.  In early 2007 the first images began generating royalties for CEF on the gettyimages.com site.
Getty Images is excited about the idea of photographers and non profits using Getty Images' normal business model as a way to generate revenue for the non profit.  Getty Images is also helping CEF expand their impact by involving other Getty Images photographers and staff in the project.
In 2007, CEF and additional Getty Images art directors and Directors of Photography (DoP's) in Los Angeles, New York, London, and Seattle helped other Getty Images photographers to organize shoots and capture imagery to donate to the CEF contract.  As a result, several hundred images are now earning royalties for the charity on gettyimages.com.
Our common goal is to expand the number and range of images, earning more royalties for CEF.  Getty Images is also working with CEF to raise the profile of their effort to media and customers.  As well, Getty Images donates an additional share of the company's revenue from each licensed image.

What are you asking me to do?

We'd like you to donate one day, on or around June 21st, the Summer Solstice and the longest, lightest day of the year, to produce stock photography.  You would sign over the license and all future royalties to Compassionate Eye Foundation, to further its mission.

Who else is participating?

A number of the Vancouver, B.C. photographers who worked on shoots last year.  A number of Blend Images photographers donated shoots on the Solstice as did OJO Images in the UK.  We hope you'll join us as we think this is an amazing project that will be newsworthy for you, Getty Images, and CEF.  Additionally, you would be helping a non-profit do their work.

What's the process to participate?

Please contact Ira Nicolai (ira.nicolai@compassionateeye.org) to indicate your interest.  Participation is by invitation.  Concepts and content maps will be approved by the Production Team.
Here are the steps you need to take to participate:
Before May 20:
  • Click «here» to review the licensing agreement (PDF document).
  • Please print, sign and send two copies back to CEF (mailing address at the bottom of this page).
By May 30:
On June 21 (or alternate date, to be confirmed with CEF):
  • Have your Solstice Shoot for CEF and shoot lots of great, saleable images.
After June 21:
  • Submit your imagery as soon as possible after the shoot.
  • Alert CEF and your DoP (If applicable) that the CEF material has been submitted.

How can I submit my work?

If you are a Getty Images contracted contributor WITHOUT an assigned editor.....
  • Photographers who are Getty Images unassigned photographers are asked to send Raw files and jpgs as well as all releases on a CD/DVD to CEF's art director and editor, Ira Nicolai and will be provided a photographer credit line that reads "Compassionate Eye Foundation/your name"
If you are a Getty Images contracted contributor with an ASSIGNED editor/art director.....
  • Submit your low res imagery directly to your editor/art director, as you normally would, for initial editing.  Please indicate that they are images to be considered for CEF.
  • When your editor/art director tells you which images Getty Images will accept, and for which collections, follow these steps to submit the hi res finals.
  • Contact Ira Nicolai (ira.nicolai@compassionateeye.org) at Compassionate Eye Foundation to obtain the CEF Username and Password to access the Getty Images Upload Portal.
  • You will upload your hi res images and releases to the Portal using this CEF Username and Password.
  • DO NOT use your own Username and Password to access the Portal for CEF submissions.  This will lead to your images being attached to your own royalty-bearing contract and not to the CEF contract.
  • When you are logged-in to the Portal, click "Create a new submission" and you will be taken to a page with the fields "Title" and "Description" among other options.
  • In the "Description" field, you must enter your editor/art director's name, the Collection designation as determined by your editor/art director and your Credit Line, e.g.  "Compassionate Eye Foundation/Photographer Name."  This is critical, so that we get the images into the editor-appointed collection and attached to the proper credit line.
  • If your editor/art director selected images for more than one collection, please create a different submission in the Portal for each collection.  This allows us to process the submissions more quickly.
  • Also, at the image level, there is a field called "Copyright Notice."  This field should be populated with "Compassionate Eye Foundation" as they are the owner of the copyright.  For images where the copyright is retained by the photographer, this field should read "Compassionate Eye Foundation/Photographer Name"
If you are currently not a Getty Images contributor.
  • Photographers who do not have a Getty Images Contract must shoot as a second shooter or an assistant to a Getty images assigned or unassigned photographer.  They are asked to send raw files and jpgs as well as all releases on a DVD/CD to CEF within 10 days after production.  Due to the conventions of the uploading system we are sorry, but they will not be provided with a photographer credit line.
All photographers need to submit model and property releases from Getty Images only.  These are available on the site and through « this link »

I'd like to do this but I'm booked on June 21st. Can I shoot another day instead?

Yes, you can shoot and donate imagery to CEF throughout the year.  Submit your imagery to the appropriate person, using the directions above.

What benefits will photographers who participate receive?

There are many reasons to be part of this, including the following:
  • By doing what you do best, you will generate funds for CEF to provide opportunities to communities in developing nations.  Check out the programs that are already in place.
  • CEF and Getty Images will include your name in all media outreach about the shoots whenever possible.
  • Getty Images will give recognition in internal, contributor, and customer communications.
  • CEF will recognize you on their website, and will ensure you are also recognized as other opportunities develop.
  • You can link to CEF from your personal site, showing your support for the charity.
  • Possible tax benefits for donating shoot-related costs (consult your advisors)
  • The one-ay shoot could be an opportunity to try new techniques, venues, subjects.
  • The shoot could be a good reason to reach out to your network of models, assistants, hair and makeup people, venue providers, etc., who may also want to donate their time for the day to support a good cause.
